See Hadrian’s Gate, a monumental marble arch built by Athenians in honor of their ruler, the Roman emperor Hadrian. It spanned an ancient road from the center of Athens, Greece, to the complex of structures on the eastern side of the city that included the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
HECATE is the goddess of thresholds, gates, and crossroads, so statues and small shrines were often placed at entrances or boundaries.
Beneath the Acropolis of Athens there were several small sanctuaries carved into the rock, including places connected with Hecate and Pan. They were not large temples like the Parthenon but smaller shrines and caves used for worship.
Explore Pan’s Sanctuary (Cave of Pan), established after the Battle of Marathon. According to tradition, Pan caused panic among the Persian army, helping the Athenians win. In gratitude, the Athenians created a cave sanctuary for Pan beneath the Acropolis.
Pan was commonly worshipped in caves rather than formal temples, which fits his connection to wilderness and mountains.
Using the quieter and less crowded Dionysius Eleuthereus Entrance, visit the Acropolis, a World Heritage Site and which in Greek means “The Sacred Rock, the high city”. The Acropolis is primarily dedicated to the Goddess Athena.
See one of the most sacred monuments at the Acropolis, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike, dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, and Nike, the goddess of victory.(B/L)
